古裝劇中，常看到大夫幫病患把脈，都是用三根手指頭，放在病患的手腕上，這也是許多人對中醫把脈的既定印象。

中國醫藥大學附設醫院副院長孫茂峰醫師說明，傳統中醫以「望、聞、問、切」四診，做為診斷疾最新出版病的方法，其中把脈問診，從古至今更是已沿用了兩千多年，是中醫治療不可或缺的步驟。

不過，由於脈象千變萬化、因病各有不同，脈象形成顯得複雜難解，且診斷上常受限於中醫師個人的經驗值，藥方的使用也難免會因主治醫師而異，以致有些人認為中醫的診脈過於玄妙、無法全然信服。而民眾選擇以中醫為主的治療比例僅佔3成左右，仍屬少數。

為了將傳統醫學客觀化、科學化，近年來，有越來越多結合中醫理論及現代科技的醫療儀器紛紛問世。

以把脈問診為例，投入研發至今約2、30年的「脈診儀」，其原理是模擬把脈，記錄動脈搏動的波型，轉換成圖像，類似現在醫學使用的心電圖。再將各類「脈波」整理歸納，建立成一個龐大的資料庫，之後便可由病人的脈象對照資料庫，分析出可能的疾病。

黃進明中醫師解釋，脈診儀的使用方式與血壓計相似，但主要是記錄脈經絡的波型變化，偵測位置通常是人兩手腕寸口的地方，主要是觀察橈動脈、皮下細小動脈及手太陰經等部位的脈象變化，之後再根據系統所收集的檔案分析、歸納出結果，套用中醫診斷的術語來表達，即為症型。

透過脈診儀的輔助，除了能將脈象資料量化、數據化，並提供醫師做初步診斷及處方用藥的參考外，同時也能提升民眾對中醫的信心，相信中醫不再只是自由心證。

台北醫學大學管理學院院長謝邦昌也表示，脈診儀的運用如同為智慧中醫開啟一扇門，透過大數據資料的建立，可以提高診斷精確度、降低錯誤率，甚至透過大數據資料庫的建立，還能從預測「人的行為」發展到預測「分子的行為」，有助中醫預測疾病，達到提前調理、治療的目標。
